OVERVIEW

Dermal Fillers

A dermal filler is a substance injected beneath the outer layer of the skin which can help volumise and reduce the effect of wrinles and folds in the skin. The filler works by filling the space in the skin which is causing the a noticable line or hollow.

Some clinicians will use permenant fillers or silicone materials; however these materials can cause allergic reactions and other significant adverse effects, because of this we only use HA (hyaluronic Acid) based fillers which are much more biocompatible and reversible in nature. Allergic reactions in these types of fillers are very rare.

HA dermal fillers are produced in various thicknesses or viscosities which are used in different areas for pleasing results.

Fillers are most commonly used to treat the lines between the nose and mouth (nasolabial lines), around the corners of the mouth (oral commisure) and to provide enhancement and definition to the lips.

The effect of fillers in nasolabial lines or sunken scars can be expected to last for upto 12 months, the effect of lip enhancement treatment can be expected to last for upto 6 months.

When HA fillers are injected into the skin there is the same temporary redness and swelling which can be expected with any dermal injection. The HA content of the filler attracts water which can cause more swelling than some other injections. The redness and swelling should subside within 2-3 days. If and vessels are danaged in the course of treatment some bruising may also occur; again this should resolve within a few days.

Before undergoing any HA filler treatment your clinician will discuss possible side effects.
